- The Kunsthistoriches Musuem (Museum of Fine Arts), located on Maria-Theresien-Platz, contains one of the greatest collections of the Old Masters’ work in the world. Highlights of this museum include Rubens’ intimate portrait of his wife, The Fur, Rembrandt’s Large Self-Portrait and Titian’s bizarre Madonna of the Cherries. The museum also includes exhibits of figurines from Ancient Egypt, magnificent sculptures, a 2000 year old Stela (stone slab), ivory carvings and an ornate golden breakfast service.
The Austrian National Gallery, housed in the spectacular Belvedere Palace, contains a celebrated collection of paintings of Austrian artists such as Gustav Klimt’s Art Nouveau The Kiss, and his Avenue in the park of Kammer mansion, and many other fabulous paintings such as Death and the Maiden by Schiele, and Gerstl’s defiant Laughing Self-Portrait.
The Museumsquartier, located on Museumplatz, has been created in the former royal stables, and is now a magnificent cultural complex heaving with museums and art galleries, such as the Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig (MUMOK), (Museum of Modern Art Ludwig Foundation), housed in a striking grey basalt building, and the Leopold Museum, housed in a refined white limestone edifice. The Leopold Museum contains an enormous collection of more than 5000 pieces of Austrian art, by the likes of Kilmt and Kokoschka, collected by Rudolf Leopold and sold to the government in 1994. The façade of the yellow stone building is as impressive as the treasures it contains inside, and becomes even more dazzling when floodlit at night. Other features are the Architectural Centre Vienna which has changing exhibitions, the fascinating Tobacco Museum and the collection of cultural facilities known as Quartier 21.
The Akademie der bildenden Künste (Academy of Fine Arts) located on the Schillerplatz, contains a huge collection of more than 300 masterpieces from the 14th to 19th centuries. Dutch and Flemish pieces from the 17th century by the Old Masters and 19th century Austrian paintings are the gallery’s mainstay, and works by Titian, van Dyck and Rembrandt proliferate, with Hieronymous Bosch’s renowned Last Judgement a particular highlight. There is also a spectacular collection of more than 60 000 copper etchings.
As with many of Vienna’s palaces, the Albertina located on Albertinaplatz, contains a huge collection of artworks, including graphic art, architectural drawings and photographs spanning many eras. In all there are approximately 65 000 drawings and one million prints featuring works by Dürer and Klimt. The collection of graphic art is one of the biggest and most valuable in the world.
The KunstHaus Wien (Vienna Art House) located on Untere Weissgerberstrasse contains works of art both on the interior and exterior. The gallery contains the paintings and architectural models of the artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, and the startling black and white building, with uneven floors and roof gardens, was also designed by him. The gallery is located near the artist’s other famous work and Austrian landmark, the Hundertwasserhaus.
The Kunsthalle is another famous Viennese gallery, situated in two locations, one in the Museumquartier and one near the Karlsplatz, allowing the display of a huge amount of pieces in its changing exhibitions. Contemporary art, and in particular object art are the main features of this gallery, and in the Karlsplatz site, located on Treitlstrasse all exhibits can also be seen from the outside as the building is completely transparent.
